Study Shows India asTthe Lowest Spam Generating Country

According to the US-based Secure Computing Corp's latest Internet Threats Report, India is producing the least percentage of spam messages among BRIC nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India and China, and this volume is 20% of that emerging from the US.

Security experts said that the lower rate of spam production in India is chiefly attributed to the higher awareness of Internet security threats and the increased presence of educated Internet users.

The report further indicated that India accounts for only 2.99% of the total spam sent worldwide, lowest among BRIC countries.

The research also revealed that Russia is the top generator of spam mails among BRIC nations, with 6.71% of all spam, followed by Brazil at 5.29% and China at 3.49%.

Also, with respect to spam mails spewed globally, the US is the greatest contributor at 16.56%, while Russia occupies the second place and Turkey, the third with 6.51%.

Meanwhile, as security experts describe, spam mails are messages that are identical in nature and sent to mass Internet users. These messages enter mailboxes without authorization as well as flood them with unwanted content; thus, exposing computers to threats of data loss and phishing.

According to Ajit Pillai, Country Manager (SAARC) of Secure Computing, majority of Internet users in India do not appear to have any malicious intention and they basically use the Web to send out e-mails, to interact on social networks and to conduct professional activities, as reported by ZeeNews on August 10, 2008.

Mr. Pillai also noted that most of the Internet users are educated and since India continues to have lower broadband penetration, it aids in keeping the volumes of spam low.

Additionally, the report warned that spam volumes generated in emerging countries are rising as they are improving their internet infrastructure.

However, as per another Internet Security Threat report by Symantec, India is the 14th country globally that hosts phishing Websites, with Mumbai hosting 38% of these sites, Delhi -29% and Chennai and Bangalore -12% each within the country.
