University of Akron Warns About Phishing Emails

Cleveland.com reported on 22nd September, 2014 stating that the University of Akron (Ohio, US) warned people via email not to click a phishing email which is presently targeting them.

The fake emails entitled "Dear Email Account User" tell the recipient that the storage limit assigned to his mailbox has exceeded its range due to large amount of junk and spam emails and new emails are currently getting rejected. To increase his account quota the user is asked to click on a link furnished within the text of the email.

The University of Akron said that it didn't send the email regarding storage-limit and doesn't know who did.

The link with the malware can build themselves into botnets which embezzle passwords or penetrate systems or lead Internauts to phishing websites tried to get them to input passwords.

Thwarting phishing scams is a tough job which means keeping people from clicking the infected links. McAfee, the security company for computer, reported last month that 80% of 16,000 business users took its online phishing quiz failed to spot at least one of the seven phishing emails.

Security Officials of Akron inform users about the ill-effects if hackers gain access to their University's ID and password. They say that in case of banking, the consequences are obvious as the scammer gets access to your wealth but in case of University, they get access to something different, and that can result in damage to both you and others.

They could potentially achieve more details about you and your friends/colleagues to rob more identities. They get access to your email, and read and send electronic mails on your end which include high amounts of spam emails. They shall have access to services of University of Akron that you are authorized to use and could modify your insurance beneficiaries, emergency contact details, direct deposit, your course selections, amongst others. They could also lock you out of your account by modifying your password.

The Officials of the University advise that if you received unsolicited email (spam) and want to report it, you can forward it to abuse@uakron.edu with complete subject matter.
