Police in UK Arrested 57 Cyber Crime Suspects

Computerweekly.com reported on 6th March, 2015 stating that UK police with the help of National Crime Agency (NCA) and partnering with industry and government has arrested 57 cyber crime suspects in different operations during the past few days.

The arrests are related to cyber crimes which include intrusion of network and theft of data from MNCs and government bodies, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, malware development and cyber-enabled fraud.

UK Police arrested a 21-year old man who is suspected to be involved in an attack launched by the known hacking outfit 'D33Ds Company' which stole 400,000 plus passwords and email addresses from Yahoo and published the same online in 2012.

National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) of NCA helped by West Midlands police, arrested a 23-year old man on Wednesday, 4th March, 2015 allegedly for hacking the US Department of Defense (DoD) in June last year.

This was related to the embezzlement of data from the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services global communication system which was employed by the DoD to communicate with workers internationally.

Others arrested in different parts of UK included a 22-year-old youth in Aldbourne, near Marlborough in Wiltshire, on suspicion of creating and spreading malware; a 20-year-old in Hackney, London on basis of launching a 15,000 Pound phishing scam; and a minor in Pudsey area of Leeds on suspicion of offences related to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in which an online service is made inaccessible by overpowering it with traffic on around 350 websites.

The crackdown on cybercrime also included visits to around 60 businesses whose servers had been found compromised.

NCA observed that compromises could be used to send spam emails, attacking websites or servers or install phishing websites to gain access to sensitive information.

It (NCA) added that that firms that follow this advice will get rid of 50% of the phishing attacks which usually take birth in the UK every month.

BBC.com published news on 6th March, 2015 quoting Andy Archibald, Deputy Director of National Cyber Crime Unit of NCA, as saying 'Criminals should realize that committing online crime will not make them unidentified by the law enforcement."
