Netflix Users of Australia targeted by an email scam

Netflix users have been warned and asked to show extreme carefulness after discovery of the sophisticated email scam that is infiltrating inboxes all over Australia. The phishing email tells Netflix users that their account was temporarily suspended in order to trick the users into clicking a link.

"We've temporarily suspeneded your account due to some issues in the automatic verification process. For this reason we suspended your account , until you verify all required informations and update your payment method," the email reads. Further, the email states that "we will provide with all the steps you need to unlock your account. Please follow these instructions after you click on the link below".

Once any Netflix user clicks on "UPDATE YOUR DETAILS" link, the user gets redirected towards a fake login page of Netflix. The fake login page of Netflix almost looks similar to the official login page of the streaming service. This Netflix-branded phishing page allowed the cybercriminals to record all the information that is entered by the victims, which can later be used for fraud and identity theft.

MailGuard, the email security company, released a statement claiming that the email scam has been first detected in the Australian inboxes on the evening of January 28, 2019.

The company warned the users to remain vigilant and also to look out for signs pointing the illegitimacy of those emails. As per a statement of the company, "there are several grammatical and spelling errors within the body, such as the bolded 'suspeneded'. Spacing errors are also present throughout the email". The company further added that the emails use display name of "NETFLlX" that has "L" in lower case instead of letter "I".

Anybody who receives this kind of email should delete that email immediately from their inbox.

As per a spokesman of Netflix, security of the member accounts has been taken seriously; and thus the company employs many proactive measures for detecting fraudulent activity to have the Netflix service as well as members' accounts secure.

The spokesman added that "unfortunately, scams are common on the internet and target popular brands such as Netflix and other companies with large customer bases to lure users into giving out personal information".
