Privacy Laws – A Long-Term Solution to SpywareTo tackle the problem of spyware in the United States, a pressure group has appealed to the U.S. Congress to legislate new privacy laws. The Anti-Spyware Coalition projected that the lack of privacy laws would mean continuous legal changes to keep pace with spyware writers. Itweek.co.uk published this on March 15, 2007. Ari Schwartz, deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), and coordinator of the Anti-Spyware Coalition clearly specified that his group firmly believes and therefore promotes fundamental privacy legislation as a long-term answer to the problem of spyware and related issues. Schwartz said this during a discussion about the HR 964 Spy Act in proposition that Itweek.co.uk published. Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates too emphasized the enforcement of all-inclusive federal privacy legislation in a speech at the annual dinner of the Center for Democracy and Technology. Gates thinks such legislation would meaningfully protect Internet users and also provide businesses with clear set of guidelines. Gates asserted the need to put into force some basic standards on today's extremely interconnected world. This would keep personal information secured and maintain people's privacy. Gates supported his views with assurances of his company's determination to developing applications, tools and services with the goal to keep the Internet a bountiful resource to help communicate, shop and conduct business. Webwire published Gate's remarks on March 13, 2007. Schwartz used a report from the Consumer Privacy Legislative Forum held in June 2006 to support his case. The report estimated that consumers bore $2.6bn in losses due to spyware in 2006, and which harmed one in eight Web and e-mail users. Over the years 2005 and 2006, CDT took help of the Anti-Spyware Coalition to establish a universal agreement on how to best deal with the spyware menace. It also set solutions to software conflicts among anti-spyware products. Schwartz further added that the optimum practices were the evolution of an unbelievable level of dedication and effort from the diverse membership of the Anti-Spyware Coalition. The document would fulfill as a vital tool for anti-spyware firms, software publishers and consumers all over the world, he said.
