Cyber Crime Pose Threat to Small Businesses

As per the Small Firms Association (SFA), criminals are taking the liberty of expanding web world, which is ever expanding with more and more people depending upon the online shopping and online banking services. Though the crimes online are largely targeted to the private consumers with attempts to hack their credit cards and bank details online, but small businesses are at risk as well.

The Assistant Director of the Small Firm Association, Avine McNally, commented in his statement published by Limerichleader on December 31, 2007 that the boom in the web world has led small businesses and firms to rely more on the Internet. Avine further added that though this practice is good enough to boost the business, but it also makes them susceptible to fraud and spam messages online.

Cyber bullying and online crimes have become the most common problems faced by small businesses. But according to the law, if a company does not take proper measure to safeguard their information and data, they will have to face a legal action in future.

Cyber spammers are in continuous process of innovating new technologies in the field of sending spam messages, and that becomes the biggest fear of small business sectors. As per the security researchers, spammers are finding out new methods to violate and destroy the traditional anti-spam solutions. The attacks of these kinds are termed as 'Spam spikes', and they usually occur when an individual domain is targeted harshly. When these kinds of attacks occur at a web domain, the small enterprises gets affected up to a great extent as the attack overloads e-mail servers, hence barring any kind of communication from the outside world through mail.

With such a strong foothold in the Internet world, cyber crime can take any business in its grip very easily, and hence, the security researchers suggest that rather following basic security measures, small business should adopt multi-layered security measures. The multi-layered security measures will take care of the access control, secure password practices, and data encryption along with the measures like staff training.
